Deep Inspiration Breath Hold Treatment

Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre patient and radiation oncologist

Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre offers our patients with a breast cancer diagnosis safer radiation treatment option with Deep Inspiration Breath Hold.

Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) is predominantly used to treat patients with breast cancer to the left side. For women with breast cancer, a major concern is the risk of radiation that can be delivered close to the heart (sitting to the left side of the body). Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) is a new and most efficient way to minimise that risk.

Not only is this a significant clinical achievement, but it also has huge benefits in reducing patient anxiety. With access to this new treatment technique, the risk of radiation beams intersecting the heart is reduced therefore reducing both heart dose and patient anxiety.

How DIBH works

DIBH is delivered using the Active Breathing Coordinator (ABC) apparatus which is programmed to match each patient’s deep inspiration respiratory cycle . This apparatus enables an increase in the natural space that exists between the heart and the radiation beam when the patient takes a deep breath.

Essentially it requires the patient to hold their breath during their radiation therapy planning CT scan and repeat that with each daily treatment. Patients only need to be able to hold their breath for a short period (around 20 seconds), several times during each daily treatment. The specialised equipment used will only allow the treatment machine to deliver radiation whilst the patient is holding their breath.

Why consider DIBH?

Minimise the dose to your lungs and heart during treatment
Complete control and the option to stop treatment
Reduce potential cardiac side effects
Allows you, the patient, to be actively involved in your radiation therapy treatment.
